Christchurch International Airport

Christchurch Airport is the most important airport on the south island of New Zealand. The airport underwent radical renovation activities that were completed at the end of 2008, the International Terminal was expanded considerably. At the same time it was integrated with the terminal for domestic flights, a new parking garage was also constructed.

Prices are given here in New Zealand dollars (NZD), €1.00 = NZD 1.88 (January 2007).

Train

There is no train connection with the airport.

Car and bus

From the center of Christchurch you reach the airport by first following Columbo Street, from Cathedral Square, and then Bealey Street and Harper Avenue, there you take a right, Fendalton Avenue, in the direction of Hagley Park and then Memorial Avenue. The airport is right by the roundabout on Memorial Avenue.

There are several possibilities to travel by bus from the airport to Christchurch. The Airport Flyer leaves every half hour from the terminal to the center of Christchurch, travel time is 30 minutes and the rate is NZD 7.00. The Shuttle Bus takes you to every desired destination in Christchurch for NZD 12.00–NZD 18.00, and the city bus line 10, Harewood–Cashmere, is the cheapest option at NZD 2.50, but takes longer, 40 minutes.

Car rental - Christchurch International Airport

In both terminals there are counters for car rental companies: Avis, Budget, Hertz and Maui Rentals. Thrifty is only represented in the terminal for domestic flights. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides, they compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.

Taxi

Taxis are outside the Arrivals Hall. They can take you to the center of Christchurch in approximately 15 minutes, the rates vary from NZD 25.00–NZD 40.00.

Airport Parking

In the new parking garage right next to the terminal there are 600 places available, the rates are: first half hour - NZD 4.00, then NZD 1.00 per 15 minutes, from two hours parking - NZD 3.00 per hour with a maximum of NZD 25.00 per day. In the parking area you pay NZD 4.00 for the first hour, then NZD 1.00 per 20 minutes, from two hours parking you pay NZD 2.00 per hour with a maximum of NZD 19.00 per day and NZD 57.00 per week. Hotels

The Sudima Hotel Grand Chancellor (tel: +64(0)3 358 3139) is a five minute walk from the terminal. Other options right by the airport are: Copthorne Hotel Commodore (tel: +64(0)3 962 9850) and Russley Hotel and Villas (tel: +64(0)3 358 6500). In the Arrivals Hall is a Travel and Information Center, where you can get information about hotels. For more hotels and to reserve online you can go to Booking.com, they have a large range of hotels with great internet rates.

Shops and restaurants

There are many bars, cafés and restaurants in both terminals, there is also a large choice of shops.

Baggage

You can store baggage at the Baggage Storage (tel: +64(0)3 353 7040) next to the Travel and Information Center in both terminals, the rate is NZD 5.00–NZD 8.00 per suitcase per day. The information center is the counter for lost and found items, you can inquire about misplaced baggage via email.

Information

In both terminals there are Travel and Information Centers, this is not only the place to get information about the airport, but also for hotel reservations, public transportation, places of interest etc, in fact it is a complete travel agency.

Business

The Travel and Information Center offers business services such as telephone, fax and copying. For the rental of offices and/or meeting rooms you can contact the International Antarctic Center (tel: +64(0)3 353 7798) or the Sudima Hotel Grand Chancellor (see Hotels).

In both terminals you can find lounges from airlines on the first level.

Disabled facilities

Christchurch Airport has excellent accessibility for the disabled. There are wheelchair ramps, adapted elevators, restrooms and showers. The ATM's are equipped with Braille. Right in front of the terminal there are parking places reserved for the disabled. Further information is available through the Travel and Information Center.

Other services

In the terminal there are many banks, money exchange offices and ATM's. The Travel and Information Center also serves as a post office. In both terminals you can find a play corner for children. If you have to wait a long time for your next flight, a visit to the International Antarctic Center is most rewarding, which is a 5 minute walk from the terminal.
