Shanghai airport: Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport (SHA)

Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is one of Shanghai's two international airports. Hongqiao Airport lies much closer to the city center than Shanghai Pudong Airport. In 2010 a second terminal was opened, four times as large as Terminal 1. Most (domestic) flights use the new terminal; Terminal 1 is allocated to international flights.

Local transport

Two subway lines connect the airport with Shanghai. Subway line 10 stops at both Terminal 1 and Terminal 2, line 2 only has a station in the newer Terminal 2.

Car and bus

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport is situated 13 kilometers southwest of the city center. The airport is easily accessible by rental car. Shanghai's inner ring road (Yan’an Xilu Highway) runs past the airport. The way is clearly signposted, not only in Chinese but also in English. You can easily reach Pudong Airport via the outer ring road (allow 30-40 minutes to travel between both airports).

There are several buses to different destinations in Shanghai. Bus 925 runs to the People's Square, bus 938 to Pudong Yangjiadu, bus 806 to Zhongshan South Yi Road, bus 807 to Shanghai West Railway Station, and bus 941 to Shanghai's main train station. Buses can be very crowded and there's little room for baggage. There are also long-distance buses to Suzhou, Nan Jing and Hongzhou. More information about bus connections can be obtained via telephone +86(0)21 6834 6912.

Large hotels have their own shuttle connection with Shanghai Hongqiao Airport.

Car rental Shanghai Hongqiao Airport

Seven car rental companies are present at Shanghai Hongqiao Airport: Advantage, Alamo, Budget, Discount, Dollar, Hertz and National. You can find the counters of the rental companies in the Arrivals Hall.

Taxis can be found outside the Arrivals Hall. These all have a meter, but make sure the driver turns it on. Traveling to Shanghai center will take 30-40 minutes (outside rush hour). Make sure to stand in the right line; taxi lines are arranged per destination. The destinations are also indicated in English.

Airport Parking

There are large parking lots in front of both terminals. These are for both short and long-term parking. Long-term parking places are of course further away from the terminal than those for short-term parking.

There are no hotels at the airport, but the Shanghai International Airport Hotel (Tel. +86(0)21 6268 8888) is very close. Other hotels nearby the airport include the Hengshan Hotel (Tel. +86(0)21 6437 7050), Hilton Shanghai Airport (Tel. +86(0)21 6248 0000) and Hotel Equatorial Shanghai (Tel. +86(0)21 6248 1688). For more hotels and to book online, you can go to They offer a large range of hotels, at competitive internet rates.

Shops and restaurants

Both terminals offer a good range of restaurants, coffee shops, cafés and (snack) bars. Inside the terminals you'll find mainly duty-free shops, but just outside the entrance there's a large shopping center offering a variation of shops, including typical Chinese merchandise like silk clothing and beautifully decorated baubles.

There are several lockers to store your baggage. There's a lost-and-found counter (Tel. +86(0)21 5114 2071) in the Arrivals Hall. You can also hire porters at fixed rates.

You'll find information desks scattered around the terminals for inquiries about the airport, services and flight schedules. You can also get information about flight schedules by telephone via +86(0)21 6268 8918. At the Tourist Office (Tel. +86(0)21 6439 0630) you can get information about places to see in and around Shanghai.

There are three small business centers at the airport, one in Terminal 1 and two in Terminal 2, with faxes, photocopiers and computers with internet access. There are also some VIP lounges. More extensive business facilities, including meeting space and conference rooms, are offered by the Shanghai International Hotel (see Hotels).

Disabled facilities

Shanghai Hongqiao Airport has good accessibility for the disabled. There are wheelchair ramps and adapted elevators and toilets.

Other services

You'll find various banks, exchange offices and ATM's scattered around the two terminals. There's also a post office in each terminal. Both terminals have a First Aid station which can be reached via one of the many telephones of the information desk. Internet access is available via the internet kiosks or via Wi-Fi.
