Malaga Airport

Malaga Airport
Malaga Airport (AGP)

The airport of the south Spanish city of Malaga is eight kilometers southwest of the city. It is one of the oldest Spanish airports. In 1919 Spanish aviation pioneers were in search of a suitable area for an airport. They came to a piece of land that is known as El Rompedizo. That was also the name of the airport for some time. The name was later changed to García Morato and in 1965 it officially became Malaga Airport.

In 2005 more than 12.5 million passengers flew via Malaga Airport. Most people come from Great Britain. The busiest connections are with London-Gatwick, Manchester, London-Luton and Dublin. After that is Brussels and Amsterdam. In the high season Malaga Airport is very busy and the waiting times for checking in can be very long.

Beginning in 2006 many activities have began to offer better facilities for the growing amount of passengers going to the sunny destinations of Costa del Sol. They are working on a new terminal and there are plans for a second runway.

Local transport

Train

Malaga Airport has a train station with direct connections to Malaga, Torremolinos and Fuengirola. There are plans to make the rail connection go further west so that Marvella will also be accessible by train. But the plans will not be realized until 2012 at the earliest.

The train station is outside the Departures Hall and is accessible via the pedestrian bridge (five to ten minutes walking). There are only machines for buying tickets. Do not go on the train without a ticket because the fine is ten times the normal price. For people are not able to walk real well, the station is difficult to access.

Car and bus

Malaga and Marbella are also accessible from the road N-340. Cheap shuttle buses for tourists leave from Terminal 1. In the high season (summer) the bus leaves to Malaga every half hour and every 45 minutes to Marbella.

The airport is also accessible from the main roadway E-15 that runs along the coast. Malaga Airport is clearly indicated on the route signs.

Car rental Malaga Airport

There is no shortage of car rental companies; there are about 20. Therefore, you have a choice from cheap to expensive. You can find the rental counters in the “basement” of Terminal 2, a floor lower than the Arrivals Hall. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides. They compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.

Taxi

Here is an indication of the taxi rates (by day) to known places along the Costa del Sol: Torremolinos € 9.00, Malaga € 12.00, Fuengirola € 23.00, Marbella € 47.00. The prices are higher in the evenings and nights. The taxi rates are indicated on large brown signs.

Airport Parking

Parking garages P-T1 (long term parking) and P-T2 (short term parking) are by the terminals, but they are not very large. Therefore, there is a new parking site, P3, which is a little further away. There is a free shuttle bus from there to the terminals. P3 is next to the future terminal 3, that is being built at this moment.

500 meters from the airport there is the HolidayCarHire parking space with guards and surveillance. There is also a free shuttle service to the airport.

Services

Hotels

There are no hotels at the airport. There is a counter for booking hotels in Terminal 2. For more hotels and reserving online you can go to Booking.com. They have a large offering of hotels with great internet rates. For more information we refer to our own page about hotels in Malaga.

Shops and restaurants

You can find duty free shops in the Centro Commercial in the Departures Hall of Terminal 2. These are very busy, especially in the busy season. For more quiet bars and restaurants with more of a Spanish atmosphere go to Terminal 1. You can also find single standing stores here.

Baggage

The airport does not have any facilities for storing luggage. If your luggage is lost there is a counter for lost luggage in Terminal 1.

Information

There are information counters in both terminals. The workers are easily recognizable in their mint green jackets.

Business

The airport does not have a business centre. There are VIP Lounges with telephone, fax, and email capabilities available. The Costa del Sol VIP Lounge (tel: +34(0)95 - 2048823) can be rented for assemblies or conferences. You can find this in Terminal 2 as well as the Europa VIP Lounge (tel: +34(0)95 - 2048854).

Handicapped Persons

There are parking spaces reserved for handicapped persons by the terminals. All airlines help handicapped persons when necessary. The train station is only accessible by stairs.

Other services

The airport has a medical centre, a pharmacy, a silence center (prayer space) and various travel agency counters.

Expositions

There is an exposition room called the Sala de Exposiciones in the hallway connecting Terminal 1 and 2. Officially the room is for the first director of the airport, Didier Daurat. The exhibitions of local artists change every month. Therefore, if you have already been to Malaga Airport the exhibition is still worth seeing. Opening times: 10:00 – 13:30 and 17:00 – 21:00.

Further, Malaga Airport houses the National Aviation Museum where an overview of Spanish aviation is given. In the garden is an original Beechcraft B-18. The museum only has scale models. Furthermore, there are motors and other equipment from the beginning of aviation until present day, including pilot clothing, masks and old advertising posters for airline companies.
