Brisbane airport: Gold Coast Airport, Australia (OOL)

Gold Coast Airport, Australia

Gold Coast Airport used to be called Coolangatta Airport. Originally it wasn't more than a patch of grass for light planes. In 1980 a terminal was built and the name was changed into Gold Coast Airport. The airport processes three million passengers a year. The domestic terminal is the busiest, but since the arrival of budget airlines the number of international flights is steadily increasing.

It's the gateway to the beaches on the so-called Gold Coast, on Australia's east coast.

Car and bus

Gold Coast Airport is situated 20 kilometers south of Surfers Paradise and north of Tweed Heads. The airport is located between the Gold Coast Highway and the Pacific Motorway and therefore easily accessible by rental car.

Outside the Arrivals Hall there's a transport kiosk where you can buy tickets for buses with various destinations. Bus 702 runs via the Gold Coast Highway to Surfers Paradise and Southport. Bus 761 maintains the connection between Tweed Heads and Robina and stops halfway at Gold Coast Airport.

Car rental Gold Coast Airport

You can find counters for car rental companies in the Arrivals Hall. Six rental companies are present at Gold Coast Airport: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, RedSpot and Thrifty. You can also book a rental car in advance by using the service provided by EasyTerra; they compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.

Outside the Arrivals Hall there are taxis of the company Gold Coast Cabs. You can book a taxi on this company's website. A taxi ride to Surfers Paradise costs approximately 40 Australian dollars.

Airport Parking

Just in front of Terminal 1 there's a short-term parking lot with directly behind it covered places for long-term parking. In front of Terminal 2 there's a smaller parking lot for short-term parking. Another long-term parking lot lies a bit further away from the terminals. More information about the various parking facilities can be found on the website of Gold Coast Airport.

There are no hotels at Gold Coast Airport, but the airport lies directly on very popular beaches where you'll find a large range of accommodations. Nearby the airport there are for example Kirra Surf Holiday Apartments‎ (Tel. +61(0)7 5589 0300), Golden Riviera Beach Resort‎ (Tel. +61(0)7 5525 9800), Coolangatta Sands Hotel‎ (Tel. +61(0)7 5536 7472) and Tweed Ultima Apartments (Tel. +61(0)7 5599 3500). Shops and restaurants

Gold Coast Airport is a small airport, but it offers a fair range of restaurants, cafés, (snack) bars and shops. The shops are mainly geared towards the main activity on the beaches, so a lot of surf gear and accessories.

There are lockers just outside the terminal, near the short-term parking lot. Large suitcases don't fit and you can only store your baggage for a maximum of 24 hours.

In both terminals there's an information desk for questions about flight schedules and airport services. There's a Transport Information Desk outside the Arrivals Hall.

There's one lounge at Gold Coast Airport, of Jetstar Airlines. The lounge is only accessible for Jetstar passengers and is mainly aimed at parents who want to entertain their children while waiting for a flight.

The Gold Coast is a holiday destination and so not really aimed at business travelers. You can however rent meeting space and conference rooms nearby the airport, at for example the conference center of Tweed Ultima Apartments (see Hotels).

Disabled facilities

Since the renovation of the terminal Gold Coast Airport has good accessibility for the disabled. There are wheelchair ramps, adapted toilets, and also low-hanging telephones. On the short-term parking lot there are also places reserved for disabled travelers.
