El Salvador Comalapa International Airport
The international airport of this Central American country is, very exceptionally, not called after the city where it's located (San Salvador), but after the island (El Salvador). It's also called Cuscatlán Airport. The airport is being expanded, including a second terminal, which is expected to be completed in 2012.
In general travelers are very satisfied with the level of service and efficient check-in and customs procedures at El Salvador Airport.
IATA airport code: SAL
ICAO airport code: MSLP
There's no train connection with El Salvador Airport.
Car and bus
The airport is situated 50 kilometers southwest of San Salvador. The airport is easily accessible by rental car: freeway RN-5 runs along the airport and the exit is clearly signposted.
Two bus lines (138 and 400) connect the airport with San Salvador. A bus leaves every 30 minutes.
Car rental El Salvador Airport
You can find counters for car rental companies in the Arrivals Hall. Apart from the local rental companies Tropic and Uno you can rent cars with Avis, Budget, Hertz and Thrifty. You can also book a rental car in advance by using the service provided by EasyTerra; they compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.
Taxis are outside the Arrivals Hall. Not all taxis have a meter. If there's no meter, make sure to agree on a price upfront. The same applies if a driver refuses to switch on the meter. Count on approximately US$ 17 for a ride to San Salvador.
There's an open-air parking lot outside the terminal. We advise to only park your rental car here for a short time.
The nearest hotel is Quality Hotel Real Aeropuerto El Salvador (Tel. +503(0)2366 0000). Other hotels in the vicinity include Comfort Inn Bahia Dorada (Tel. +503(0)2375 5000), the backpacker hostel Pato Canales (Tel. +503(0)2339 7004) and Hotel Rancho Estero y Mar (Tel. +503(0)2316 6100), a resort splendidly located by the sea. For more hotels and to book online, you can go to Booking.com. They offer a large range of hotels, at competitive internet rates.
Shops and restaurants
For the relatively small size of El Salvador Airport there's a good range of restaurants, cafés, (snack) bars and shops. A visit to the Tapacun Specialty Coffee House is a must for those hooked on coffee. Here you can not only drink excellent coffee, but also buy packs of coffee.
You cannot store your baggage but there's a lost-and-found desk in the Arrivals Hall.
For questions about El Salvador Airport, flight schedules and airport services you can turn to the information desk in the central hall.
El Salvador Airport doesn't offer any business facilities except for some basic facilities in the Taca Salones VIP lounge (faxing, copying, internet access). This may change when the second terminal is ready. The nearby Rancho Estero (see Hotels) has a conference room available.
El Salvador International Airport has excellent accessibility for the disabled. The airport complies with American rules and therefore has wheelchair ramps and adapted elevators and toilets.
There are exchange offices and some ATM's in the central hall.
