Bucharest Airport

Bucharest Airport is officially called Henri Coanda/Otopeni International Airport and is 16 kilometers north of the Romanian capital. It is named after the Romanian aviation pioneer Henri Coanda, Otopeni is the name of the place where the airport is. The airport is growing rapidly, in 2007, 4.5 million travelers were expected. There are two terminals, Domestic and International, which a free shuttle bus goes between.

Prices are given here in the Romanian lei (RON). Be advised: from January 1, 2007 only the new lei was the official currency and the old lei (ROL) was abolished, €1.00 = RON 3.40 (January 2007).

There is no train connection with the airport yet. There are plans to put a lightrail connection to the North Station in Bucharest.

Car and bus

The airport is along the most important national road, DN 1, that goes from the airport to the capital. The exit to the airport is clearly indicated.

There is a special bus that goes from the airport to the center of Bucharest. Although it is called the 783 Express Line it is not that fast because of the many stops, travel time to the center takes approximately 60 minutes. The bus leaves every 15 minutes from both terminals.

Car rental - Bucharest Airport

In the Arrivals Hall there are counters for car rental companies: Budget, Europcar and Hertz. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides, they compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.


Taxis are in front of the Arrivals Hall of both terminals, Fly Taxi (tel: +40(0)21 201 9440), the price is RON 2.00 per kilometer. There are also cheaper mini buses that you share with other travelers. There is a special taxi counter in the International Arrivals Hall. Complaints about taxis can be passed on to the airport police (tel: +40(0)21 201 3242).

Airport Parking

The airport has a uniform parking price, you pay RON 2.00 per 30 minutes. For further information about parking (tel: +40(0)21 201 3374).



There are no hotels at the airport. The nearest hotel is the Angelo Airport Hotel (tel: +40(0)21 203 6500). In addition there is also: the Hotel Charter Otopeni Airport which was opened in 2006, the RIN Hotel and the Confort Hotel (tel: +40(0)21 350 4110) right by the airport.

There is a welcome counter in the Baggage Hall for travelers that have a room reserved with Marriott, Intercontinental or Hilton. For more hotels and to reserve online you can go to Booking.com, they have a large range of hotels with great internet rates.

Shops and restaurants

There are a few snack bars and restaurants in the International Departures Hall, there are also several machines for coffee, tea, soft drinks and snacks. The range of shops is modest, this includes a wine shop, there is also a shop that sells Romanian souvenirs.


There are windows for lost and found items in the Baggage Hall. Depending on which airline you are flying with, you can contact Menzies, for Air France, Air Moldova, Alitalia, British Airways, Czech Airlines and Turkish Airlines (tel: +40(0)21 204 2675), Globeground for Aeroflot, Austrian Airlines, Cimber Air, El-Al, Hemus Air, KLM/Northwest, Continental Airlines, Lot, Lufthansa, Malev, Olympic Airways, Swiss and SyrianAir (tel: +40(0)21 204 1043) or Tarom, for other airlines and general (tel: +40(0)21 201 4976).


In both terminals there are information counters which are also accessible through the telephone numbers (tel: +40(0)21 204 1200) and (tel: +40(0)21 204 1210).


The VIP lounge offers business facilities such as fax, copying and internet. Information is through the general telephone number. Extensive facilities and meeting rooms are available in the Golden Tulip Sky Gate Hotel (see Hotels).

Disabled facilities

The airline is very accessible for the disabled. There are wheelchair ramps, adapted elevators and restrooms.

Other services

There is a bank (Romanian Bank for Development) and in the International Arrivals Hall and Departure Hall there are ATM's and money exchange offices. There is a post office in the International Departures Hall. There is an internet café on the first level of the Departures Hall. Furthermore, there is a hairdresser and a pharmacy. In the Departures Hall and in the Arrivals Hall there are special telephones where you can directly request First Aid.
