Lisbon airport: Lisbon Portela Airport (LIS)

Lisbon Portela Airport

Lisbon Airport is seven kilometers northeast of the Portuguese capital. It was opened on October 15, 1942, after WW2 rapid expansion was necessary.

Lisbon Airport has to deal with the rapidly growing amount of passengers and freight. Therefore, plans have been drawn to build a new airport 50 kilometers northwest of Lisbon, but no projects have been realised yet. In the meantime substantial renovations to the existing airport have been made. A new runway was constructed to improve ground movements of the airplanes, among other improvements. The whole renovation at the Portela Airport was completed in 2008. The airport now has 2 terminals and many new facilities. As of May 2016 the airport will change its name to the Humberto Delgado Airport.
