Rome Ciampino Airport

Ciampino Airport in Italian is called Aeroporto di Roma-Ciampino. Less known is the name Giovan Battista Pastine Airport. It was originally opened as a military airport, and was opened for civilian use to relieve the Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) airport and to offer space for budget companies and charter flights. In 2015 the airport handled 5.8 million passengers.

Getting from Rome Ciampino Airport to Rome

The distance from Rome Ciampino Airport to central Rome is about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles). You can reach Rome easily by public transport. You can take the COTRAL/SCHIAFFINI busses from the airport to the railway station of Ciampino. This short trip takes about 5 minutes and the buses leave every 30 minutes. From Ciampino railway station you can travel to Rome by light rail. The trip to Rome Termini takes about 15 minutes.

If you rather travel by bus directly to Rome Termini you can use one of the many buses that leave from the airport. You can use one of the following bus companies: ATRAL, COTRAL, SIT, TERRAVISION en SCHIAFFINI. Please check the websites for the timetables, routes and ticket costs.

Local Transport


There is no train connection with this airport. Buses from Schiaffini (Cotral) maintain the connection with train and subway stations (see below).

Car and bus

Ciampino is 15 kilometers southeast of the center of Rome and not far from the ring road around the Italian capital, the Grande Raccordo Anulare – GRA. From the ring road you take exit 23, you drive via Appia Nuova directly to the airport in the direction of Castelli Romani.

Schiaffini (tel: +39(0)6 7130 531), website is only available in Italian, is a bus company that looks after various lines:

  • To metro station Anagnina, €1.00 (metro to center of Rome, €1.00).
  • To train station Ciampino, €1.00 (train to station Termini, €2.00).
  • Directly to central station Termini, €5.00.

Terravision (tel: +39(0)679 494 572) also goes directly to Termini, this bus runs often and is somewhat more expensive at €8.00, the company also maintains a connection with Leonardo da Vinci (Fiumicino) Airport.

Car rental - Rome Ciampino Airport

In the Arrivals Hall you can find counters for six car rental companies: Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Thrifty Car Rental, Maggiore and Sixt. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides, they compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.


Taxis are opposite the Arrivals Hall. The official taxis have meters, but sometimes you have to ask for them to be connected, Taxitel (tel: +39(0)679 494 275). The normal price to the central station Termini in Rome amounts to no more than €40.00, but some drivers do not hesitate to ask for double the amount, ensure that you have arranged the price, including the baggage and service charge (tutto inclusivo).

There is also a special Taxi Airport Shuttle, that you can reserve before your arrival (tel: +39(0)642 014 507).

Airport Parking

Up to three hours parking costs €3.00 per hour and then €1.00 per hour thereafter, the day price for the first four days is €18.00, from the fifth day €8.00. For information about parking (tel: +39(0)679 494 353).




The new Hotel Meeting (tel: +39(0)672 670 396) is only one kilometer from the airport. Other options that are close to the airport are: Hotel Palacavicchi (tel: +39(0)679 342 10), Appia Park Hotel (tel: +39(0)671 674 1) and Best Western Hotel Giardino D’Europa (tel: +39(0)672 222 52). Shops and restaurants

The airport has limited store offerings, but the usual items are available. There are no restaurants, but there are bars and coffee shops.


You can inquire about lost objects at the office of ENAC/DCA (Ufficio Oggetti Rinvenuti) on the first floor of the Departures Hall (tel: +39(0)679 348 320). You cannot store luggage.


The airport has four information counters where you can ask questions about the airport, arrival and departure times, etc.


The airport has no business facilities. In the general terminal there is a VIP lounge which is open 07.00–23.00.

Disabled facilities

Ciampino has adaptations for the disabled in the restrooms and elevators. Opposite the International Terminal there are six parking spaces reserved for the disabled. Most buses are not accessible for wheelchair users.

Other services

There are ATM's, a bank (Banca di Roma), a money exchange office and a post office. The First Aid station is situated in the Departures Hall (tel: +39(0)6 7949 4336). There is also a vaccination clinic (tel: +39(0)6 7949 4420).
