Bari Airport (BRI)

The airports in Apulia (Puglia) in southern Italy have formed a cooperation. The Bari airport is a division of Aeroporti di Puglia, which also includes Brindisi Airport, Foggia Airport and Taranto Airport. Bari Airport is 11 kilometers northwest of the city near Palese. The official name is ‘Karol Wojtyla Airport’, after Pope John Paul II. Locals also call it Aeroporto di Palese Macchie.

A new terminal (with 5 levels) will be opened shortly. About 1.6 million passengers use the airport each year.

Local transport

Train

The Bari Airport has no train connection, but the Tempesta busses (see below) go to the train station in the city. An express train runs from Bari to places including Napels and Rome.

Car and bus

The airport is accessible from the ring road around Bari: from the north you follow the direction of Foggia, and from the south you follow the SP 271. From Foggia you can reach the airport from the motorway SS16 where the exit to the airport is clearly indicated.

There are two bus connections with the airport. There is the regular city bus (Amtab line 16) that makes several stops including the Via Capitaneo, Via Ranieri and Via Diaz. On average you have to wait an hour for the Amtab bus to leave. The shuttle bus (Tempesta) is more expensive, but it goes often and brings you directly to the city centre (Piazza Aldo Moro).

Car rental Bari Airport

In the Arrivals Hall you can find counters for the car rental companies Auto Europa, Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Maggiore, Thrifty, Win Rent, Quicar and Targarent. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides. They compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.

Taxi

Taxis stand in front of the Arrivals Hall (tel: +39(0)80 554 3333). A ride to Bari takes about 25 minutes and costs approximately € 20.00.

Airport Parking

The airport has a total of 2300 parking places. There is short term parking in P14 and P4 right in front of the terminal. Right behind them is the parking garage PM (€ 6.00 for the first 6 hours, € 14.50 per day).

P2 and P3 are intended for long term parking (€ 9.30 per day for the first 3 days). As you approach Bari Airport the first parking area you see is P15. It is fairly far from the terminal, but you can park there for free if it is not full because there are less than 200 places.

Services

Hotels

There are no hotels at the airport. The nearest hotels are the Albergo Palumbo Hotel (tel: +39(0)80 5300222) and Hotel Residence Riviera (tel: +39(0)80 5300582). These are directly on the coast by the airport, but Bari is not too far away and there is a large number of hotels. For more hotels and reserving online you can go to Booking.com. They have a large offering of hotels with great internet rates.

Shops and restaurants

Bari Airport has a reasonable offering of shops. In total there are more than 20 stores with a variety of items including newspapers and books, tobacco goods, electronics, toys, jewelry, mobile telephones, local specialties, necessary travel items and cosmetics. There is also a duty-free shop.

Baggage

There is a counter for lost and found items in the Arrivals Hall (‘SEAP Lost & Found’, tel. +39(0)80 580 0224). When you fly with Alitalia you need to contact them at tel: +39(0)80 531 5411.

Information

There is a general information counter (tel: +39(0)80 580 0200) in the Departures Hall. Furthermore, there is a touch screen computer display (Totem Web Point) in the terminal where you can not only get information about flights but also about the Apulia region (tourist, economical, cultural).

Business

The airport has limited business services. In the Departures Hall you will find the SEAP Lounge (open from 05:00 to 21:00) that also has small offices and meeting rooms.

Handicapped persons

The airport is very accessible for handicapped persons. Right by the main entrance are 45 parking places reserved for handicapped persons. Just like many other Italian airports, at Bari Airport you can ask for assistance when needed.

Other services

There is a bank (Banca Antonveneta), and there are various cash machines. The prayer room was consecrated by Pope John Paul II during his visit to Bari in February 1984.
