Frankfurt Airport (FRA)
Frankfurt Airport is the largest in Germany. It is an important transit hub that processed 52 million passengers in 2005. It therefore processes the third most in Europe, after London-Heathrow and Paris-Charles de Gaulle. There are plans to expand the airport with a fourth runway, but the decision about that has been postponed many times.
There are two terminals at the airport. A third terminal is under construction on the grounds of the former American air base on the south side of the airport. The new terminal is intended for intercontinental flights.
The connection between the terminals is maintained by Skyline, an automatic train.
Local transport
Train
There are two train stations: the underground Regionalbahnhof and the above ground Fernverkehrbahnhof. S-Bahn trains and regional trains leave from the Regionalbahnhof to the central station (Hauptbahnhof) in Frankfurt. There are also trains to Offenbach, Hanau, Rüsselsheim, Mainz and Wiesbaden. Only Intercity trains and the high speed ICE train stop at Fernverkehrbahnhof and go from Frankfurt to Cologne (travel time: 1 hour).
Car and bus
The airport is 12 kilometers southwest of Frankfurt at the intersection (Frankfurter Kreuz) of highway A3 (Cologne-Munich) and A5 (Hannover-Basel). The exit to the airport is clearly indicated (“Flughafen”).
Most busses leave right in front of the exit of Terminal 1. There are many bus lines, and the most important are: bus line 61 to Südbahnhof in Frankfurt, line 900 to the station Oberhausen and bus 73 to Kelsterbach. There is a special shuttle bus to Darmstadt and Lufthansa busses maintains the express service to Hahn Airport, Heidelberg, Mannheim and Strasbourg.
Only bus lines 61, 68, 73 and 975 stop at Terminal 2, but Terminal 1 is accessible by the Skyline in two minutes.
Car rental Frankfurt Airport
In both terminals are counters for six car rental companies: Alamo, Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides. They compare the rates of several car rental providers in a single quote.
Taxi
In front of the Arrival Hall in both terminals are many taxis. A ride to Frankfurt lasts approximately 20 minutes without traffic and costs about € 20.00.
Airport Parking
By both terminals are large parking garages that have direct entry into the airport. For Terminal 1 follow the signs to P1 through P5 and for Terminal 2 follow the signs to P8 and P9. In P1, P4 and P5 are places reserved for female travelers. The costs are: first half hour € 1.50, and € 3.50 per hour after that with a maximum of € 22.50 per day. A week of parking costs € 112.50, and the second week is free. For each day after that you pay € 5.00 per day.
There is a monitored parking garage by Terminal 1, maintained by Airport Car Service (tel: +49(0)96 690 27901).
On the south side of the airport there is also a parking lot (“Holiday Parking”), but there are only 1000 places. Cost per week: in the high season € 64.00 and € 54.00 in the low season.

Hotels
The Sheraton Hotel (tel: +49(0)69 69770) at the airport is connected to Terminal 1 by a walkway. Hotels near the airport are, amongst others: NH Frankfurt Airport (tel: +49(0)61 052040), Comfort Inn (tel: +49(0)61 057050), Mercure Airport (tel: +49(0)61 077680), NH Hotel Rhein-Main (tel: +49(0)61 429900) and Steigenberger Airport Hotel (tel: +49(0)69 69750).
Many hotels in Frankfurt have a shuttle bus connection with the airport. You can find these shuttle busses in front of Arrivals Hall A of Terminal 1 and in front of the Check-in Hall of Terminal 2. Shops and restaurants
Frankfurt Airport has an extensive offering of stores, snack bars, cafés and restaurants in both terminals. Besides the customary offerings, there is among other things a complete supermarket. You can find the á la carte restaurant (“Connection Bistro”) on the second level of Terminal 1 (Area B)
Baggage
The baggage handling at this airport is extremely efficient. In all baggage halls is a window for misplaced baggage (tel: +49 (0)69 690 71001). For other lost and found items you can go to the window on the first floor of Terminal 1 (tel: +49(0)69 690 66359). A special service for the packing of large baggage in boxes or crates can be found in Arrivals Hall B of Terminal 1 and Arrivals Hall E of Terminal 2. Information
You can find general information counters in various places in both terminals. There are also computers with touch screens where you can find information about the airport, arrival and departure times, hotels, and tourist attractions in Frankfurt.
Business
Immediately opposite Terminal 1 is the Frankfurt Airport Centre with the Airport Conference Centre (tel: +49(0)69 690 70500) on the first floor. There is a pedestrian bridge between the conference centre and the terminal (Departure Halls A and B). The ACC offers extensive business services. There are offices and meeting rooms up to a maximum of 200 persons. In Terminal 2 are rooms that can be rented for presentations tel: +49(0)69 690 70291).
Many airlines have their own lounges at the Frankfurt Airport. The Europe City Club lounge, (Terminal 1, third floor) is accessible for everyone who pays a fee.
Handicapped persons
The airport is very accessible for handicapped persons. There are wheelchair ramps and adapted restrooms, telephones and check-in counters. At both terminals there are parking places reserved for handicapped persons and the Skyline is also accessible for wheelchairs. There are also special waiting rooms for handicapped travelers (tel: +49(0)69 690 71276). The company Behinderten und Krankentransport Kaster (tel: +49(0)60 7481 4544) maintain a transportation service for handicapped persons to and from the airport.
Other services
There are a large number of banks, money exchange offices and cash machines. In the Frankfurt Airport Center banks offer a complete service. There is also a fully equipped post office. Furthermore, there are many children’s play corners, baby rooms and credit card enabled telephones. At the window for lost and found items you can rent child strollers. Wireless internet is available in both terminals. On both the ground floor and the second level of Terminal is a pharmacy (Metropolitan Pharmacy, tel: +49(0)69 695 8076). The First Aid station can be found in the Departures Hall of Terminal 1 between areas B and C (tel: + 49(0)69 690 66767). On the third level of the same terminal is a casino (tel: +49(0)69 697 6886).
