The history of Panama City Airport is interesting. It was constructed in 1947 as Patilla Point Airfield, a military airport mainly meant to defend the strategically placed Panama Canal.

There's no train connection with Panama City Airport.

Car and bus

The airport is situated 24 kilometers northeast of the center of Panama City. The airport is easily accessible by rental car. From the city you can either take the Corredor Sur (a toll road) or the Via Tocumen. Via the toll road it takes you 20 minutes to get to the airport, but if you choose the busy Via Tocumen the ride to the airport may take more than an hour.

There are no buses connecting the airport with Panama City.

You can find counters of car rental companies in the Arrivals Hall. Seven rental companies are present at Panama City Airport: Avis, Barriga, Budget, Dollar, Hertz, National/Alamo and Thrifty. Taxis are the only means of public transport between the airport and Panama City. You can book a taxi at a fixed rate at a ticket kiosk. Airport Parking

There's a parking lot in front of the terminal. You pay per minute: for the first hour US$ 0.03/minute, the second until the fifth hour US$ 0.02/minute and after that US$ 0.01/minute.




Opposite the airport you'll find the Riande Airport Hotel (Tel. +507(0)290 3333). A bit further away from the airport, in Villa Lucre, lies Hotel Veracruz‎ (Tel. +507(0)227 3022). Shops and restaurants

There are restaurants, (snack) bars and shops at Panama Airport, but not very many.


You cannot store your baggage at Panama Tocumen Airport. For lost-and-found objects you need to turn to the information desk. The Panamanian Tourist Office has a counter near the baggage claim area.


In the central hall you'll find an information desk for inquiries about Panama Airport, flight schedules and airport services.


Apart from a VIP lounge (Tocumen Royal Saloon, Tel. +507(0)238 2600) offering basic facilities like faxing, copying and internet access Panama Airport doesn't offer business facilities. More extensive business facilities, including meeting rooms, can be found at the Riande Airport Hotel or in the business hotels in the city (see Hotels).

Disabled facilities

Panama City Airport meets American standards and is therefore fully accessible for the disabled. There are wheelchair ramps, adapted elevators and toilets, and also low-hanging telephones.

You can go to exchange offices, ATM's and a branch of the National Bank of Panama to change money. You can fax, make international telephone calls and use the internet at the Cable & Wireless kiosk.
