Phuket International Airport
Thailand's largest island is a popular tourist destination. It's therefore no surprise that Phuket Airport is the second-busiest of the country. The terminal however is much more compact, convenient and pleasant than the one at Thailand's largest airport (Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport).
IATA airport code: HKT
ICAO airport code: VTSP
There are no trains on Phuket.
Car and bus
Phuket Airport is situated 32 kilometers north of Phuket Town. That seems far away, but the island's capital is not the main destination for tourists. They go to the holiday resorts on the west coast closer to the airport. The airport is easily accessible by rental car. The island's main road Thep Kasattri (road number 402) runs past the airport; the exit to the airport is clearly signposted.
Upon flight arrivals, the Airport Bus leaves for Phuket Town's center via various popular hotels.
Car rental Phuket Airport
You can find counters of car rental companies in the Arrivals Hall. Six rental companies are present at Phuket Airport: Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Sixt, and the local provider Thai Rent-a-Car. You can also book a rental car in advance using the service provided by EasyTerra; they compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.
You can find taxis outside the Arrivals Hall, but on Phuket they are not cheap. Count on a price of 500 baht for a ride to places such as Patong and Karon, and more for places further out.
There's an open-air short and long-term parking lot outside the terminal.
There are no hotels at Phuket Airport, but you can find accommodation nearby. At the airport's entrance road you can find the Phuket Airport Hotel (Tel. +66(0)76 328 451). Other hotels nearby the airport include Dewa Phuket Hotel (Tel. +66(0)76 372 300), Nai Yang Beach Resort (Tel. +66(0)76 328 300) and the simple Tanamas House (Tel. +66(0)76 205 218). For more hotels and to book online, you can go to Booking.com. They offer a large range of hotels, at competitive internet rates.
Shops and restaurants
Phuket Airport offers a reasonable number of restaurants, cafés and (snack) bars. There are also about ten shops, including four duty-free shops. Nice to look around, but definitely not worth spending hours.
You can store your baggage in lockers in the central hall. There's also a lost-and-found desk.
In both the Arrivals and Departure Halls (Tel. +66(0)76 327 1100) you can find information desks for inquiries about Phuket Airport, flight schedules and airport services. The Tourist Office (Tel. +66(0)76 327 110) also has a kiosk.
Apart from the Thai Airways VIP lounge there are no business facilities at Phuket Airport. For meeting space and conference rooms you need to turn to the larger resorts on the island, such as the Dewa Hotel (see Hotels). Hotels on Phuket are more aimed at tourists than business travelers.
Phuket Airport has excellent accessibility for the disabled. There are wheelchair ramps, adapted elevators and toilets, and also low-hanging telephones. In addition parking places have been reserved for disabled travelers near the terminal entrance.
You can find four exchange offices in the Arrivals Hall; there's only one in the Departure Hall. There are also several ATM's and a post office. The First Aid station (Tel. +66(0)76 327 1133) is located in the Departure Hall.
