Jeddah King Abdulaziz International Airport
Every year, for hundreds of thousands of Muslims, Jeddah Airport forms the gateway to Mecca, for the annual Hajj. To allow for this peak in travelers, there's a special terminal, the Hajj Terminal, which stands out for its roof construction which reminds somewhat of a campsite. Although this is one of the largest terminals in the world, its capacity is insufficient. Jeddah Airport is being expanded.
IATA airport code: JED
ICAO airport code: OEJN
With the construction of new terminals a new high-speed rail-link from the airport to Jeddah will also be built. It's not yet known when this line will be operational.
Car and bus
The airport is situated 19 kilometers north of Jeddah's city center. The airport is easily accessible by rental car: it lies both along the freeway to Mecca and the one to Medina. The ride from the airport to Mecca will take approximately 1 hour.
There are no bus connections with the airport.
Car rental Jeddah Airport
You can find counters of car rental companies in the Arrivals Hall. Apart from the international rental companies Avis, Budget and Hertz there are also local rental companies present. You can also book a rental car in advance by using the service provided by EasyTerra; they compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.
There are an enormous amount of taxis outside the Arrivals Hall. There are set rates; depending on the destination in or around Jeddah you pay 50-100 riyal. Allow 20-30 minutes to get to Jeddah.
There's a large parking lot outside the terminal. The first 15 minutes are free, and then you pay 3 riyal per hour.
There are no hotels at the airport, but the Elaf Jeddah Hotel (Tel. +966(0)2 215 0525) is nearby. They offer a large range of hotels, at competitive internet rates.
Shops and restaurants
There's a good range of restaurants, cafés, (snack) bars and shops, both before and after customs. There are no special duty-free shops, because all goods in Saudi Arabia are duty free. No alcoholic beverages are served or sold at Jeddah Airport.
You can store your baggage in a locker or deposit it at a counter. To inquire about lost objects you call +966(0)2 685 5526.
In the Arrivals Hall there's an information desk (Tel. +966(0)2 640 5000) for inquiries about Jeddah Airport, flight schedules and airport services. Almost all employees speak English, and sometimes even French or German.
At various VIP lounges you can fax, copy and use the internet. Extensive business facilities (including meeting space and conference rooms) are offered by the Elaf Jeddah Hotel (see Hotels).
Jeddah Airport has good accessibility for the disabled. There are wheelchair ramps and adapted elevators and toilets. Right in front of the terminal parking places have been reserved for disabled travelers.
You'll find banks, exchange offices and ATM's scattered around the terminals. Wireless internet is also available (not free) and there's a post office in the Arrivals Hall. Behind customs there's a large mosque.
