Singapore Changi International Airport
Every year Singapore Airport is listed in the Top 5 of best airports in the world. Since the opening in 1981, the airport has received hundreds of awards in several categories. However, it's a bit worn down and to stay up to date Singapore Airport is investing a lot in modernization and improvements. In 2011 for example Terminal 1 was taken in hand. To meet with the growing number of budget flights the Budget Terminal has been expanded. A free Sky train runs between the terminals.
Airport transfers & parking
The train station is connected with Terminal 2. It takes you about half an hour to get from the airport to Singapore's center. More information on the website of Singapore Metro Rail Transport.
Car and bus
The airport is situated 20 kilometers northeast of Singapore's center. The airport is easily accessible by rental car via the East Coast Parkway. It's a toll road for which you need to pay electronically. The car rental companies at the airport sell the necessary chip cards.
Bus 36 connects the airport with the city center. The bus stops at Terminals 1, 2 and 3. The journey takes about an hour. At the Ground Transportation Centre in the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 1 you can get information about all means of transport to and from the airport.
Car rental Singapore Changi Airport
Rental company Avis has counters in all terminals; Hertz is only present in Terminals 2 and 3. You can also book a rental in advance using the service provided by EasyTerra; they compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.
You can find taxis 24 hours a day outside the Arrivals Hall. You can also choose to share a taxi, the so-called Maxi Cabs. These maintain shuttle connections between Singapore Airport and hotels in the city.
There are several parking facilities at Singapore Airport. There are parking lots near Terminals 1 and 3 and near Terminal 2 you'll find a large parking garage which can accommodate 2,600 cars. The number of parking places near the Budget Terminal is limited.
Facilities & services
You can find so-called Transit Hotels in all terminals. These are mainly meant to freshen up or rest in between flights. The only 'real' hotel at the airport is the Crowne Plaza Hotel (Tel. +65(0)6823 5300), connected with Terminal 3. Other hotels nearby the airport include Changi Village Hotel (Tel. +65(0)6496 7699), Aloha Resort (Tel. +65(0)6581 9033) and the Cameron Hotel (Tel. +65(0)6545 1816). For more hotels and to book online, you can go to Booking.com. They offer a large range of hotels, at competitive internet rates.
Shops and restaurants
Singapore Airport is not only one of the best airports in the world when it comes to service; there are also a large number of restaurants, cafés, (snack) bars and shops. Most are open 24 hours a day. To eat you can choose from several Asian specialties, but there are also Western restaurants and fast-food chains. Those who like to shop get their share at Singapore airport. The shopping area is large, varied and, of course, you can buy duty-free articles too.
In all terminals you can store your baggage in lockers. For lost-and-found objects, you need to turn to one of the information desks, which you'll find scattered around the terminals.
Scattered around the terminals you'll find information desks for inquiries about Singapore Airport, flight schedules and services. There are also several information kiosks with touch screens. You can also directly contact staff of the information desk by calling via one of the telephones at the airport.
In the Transit Hotels you'll find Business Centers, which offer facilities for faxing, copying and internet access. Meeting rooms are also available. For reservations you call +65(0)6542 5538 (Terminal 1), +65(0)6542 8122 (Terminal 2) or +65(0)6823 5300 (Terminal 3). At the iConnect Centre in Terminal 2 you can convene videoconferences. More extensive business facilities are offered by the Crowne Plaza Hotel (see Hotels).
The Transit Lounges, such as the Rainforest Lounge (website) and the Plaza Premium Lounge are excellent, with for example a spa, showers and silence rooms.
Singapore Airport has excellent accessibility for the disabled. There are wheelchair ramps, adapted elevators and toilets, and also low-hanging telephones. You can rent wheelchairs via the medical service (see First Aid at Other services).
There are banks and exchange offices, of which some are open 24 hours a day. At several locations you'll also find ATM's to change money. In the Transit Lounges there are computers with free internet access; in most places you also have free Wi-Fi access. First Aid is available in the medical clinic (Tel. +65(0)6543 1118 or +65(0)6543 2223). The airport also has a swimming pool, a spa, a fitness center, showers, massage parlors, hairdressers and a silence center. In most ladies rooms there are facilities to change baby nappies. There are also some beautifully laid out gardens. Smoking areas can be found inside as well as outside, in the Budget Terminal only on the outside terrace.
