San Diego International Airport (SAN)
The international airport of San Diego is located seven kilometers to the west of the city and it has three terminals (1, 2 and a Commuter Terminal). Between the terminals, there is a free shuttle bus, the so-called ‘Red Bus’.
There is no train connection to San Diego Airport.
Car and bus
San Diego airport is easy to reach via the I-5. In a northerly direction, take the exit San Diego Airport, then follow the signs to Hawthorn Street, which leads to North Harbor Drive. The entrance to the airport appears after about a mile.
In a southerly direction, also take the exit San Diego Airport on the I-5, this will take you to Kettner Boulevard, turn right at the intersection (traffic lights) with Sassafras, and turn left at the next traffic lights, you are now on Pacific Highway, turn right at the Laurel Street intersection, right again at the next traffic lights, you are now on North Harbor Drive.
Between the airport and the center of San Diego there is a bus every 10 minutes, the Flyer Route 992, which stops at both terminals and also stops at Santa Fe Depot (for Coaster trains) and the Amtrak train station.
Car rental - San Diego International Airport
In the terminals, there are no car rental company desks, which are located immediately outside the airport premises. There are shuttle buses to the offices of Advantage, Alamo, Autorent, Avis, Budget, Dollar, Enterprise, Fox, Hertz, National, Pacific, Payless, Rent4Less, Thrifty and West Coast Rent-a-Car, which can be requested via special telephones or via the Airport Ambassadors (see under Information). There are plenty of taxis in front of each terminal. A staff member will direct you to the first available taxi, unless you insist on taking another taxi. Taxi companies that operate at the airport include Airport Yellow Cab of San Diego (tel: +1(0) 619 234 6161) and Orange Cab (tel: +1(0) 619 291 3333).
There is a parking area in front of each terminal. The parking rate for the first hour is $1.00, after which it is $2.00 an hour. The daily rate for the first day is $18.00 and after that it is $24.00 per day. There are three long-term parking areas, outside the airport premises, with a daily rate between $10.00 and $12.00. From these areas on 3015 North Harbor Drive, 2395 McCain Road and 3302 Pacific Highway, there are shuttle buses to the terminals, in colors green, orange and blue. There are no hotels on the airport premises, but the Sheraton San Diego Hotel and Marina (tel: +1(0)619 291 2900) is located immediately opposite the airport. Shops and restaurants
The airport has a reasonably, though not excessively high, number of shops, fast food restaurants, snack bars and cafés. There are no Duty Free shops at this airport.
For safety reasons, it is not possible to store baggage at San Diego Airport. There is a lost and found desk at the baggage handling area in Terminal 2 which is open from 08:00-12:00 and from13:00-17:00 (tel: +1(0)619 400 2140).
Everywhere in the terminals, there are volunteer Airport Ambassadors, recognizable by their green polo shirts with the words ‘Airport Information’, they can provide information, not only about airport and flights, but also about hotels, rental cars and public transport. There are also information desks (tel: +1(0)619 231 7361 or +1(0)619 231 5230).
San Diego Airport does not have a business center, but the Sheraton opposite the airport offers extensive business facilities, including state-of-the-meeting rooms, conference rooms and exhibition space for up to 2,000 people.
San Diego airport is very accessible to disabled people. There are modified elevators and toilets, in addition, there are wheelchair slopes and text. Both the shuttle buses and the Flyer Bus to San Diego are accessible to wheelchair users. Also, the Airport Ambassadors can provide assistance. At the parking areas, there are disabled parking spaces near the elevators to the suspended bridge.
There are eight Bank of America ATM's located throughout the three terminals. The exchange office in Terminal 1 is open from 07:30-15:00, the office in Terminal 2 is located behind the security check and is open from 06:30-16:00. Outside the terminal building there are mail boxes. There are no smoking areas in San Diego Airport, you are allowed to smoke outside, but not too close to the entrance, there are ashtrays at locations where smoking is allowed.
