Berlin Tegel Airport

Berlin Tegel Airport (TXL)
Berlin, the German capital, has three airports (Tegel, Schoeneveld and the smaller Tempelhof). In 2011 there will be only one airport: Schoenefeld Airport will be renamed Hauptstadt-Airport Berlin-Brandenburg International (BBI). The number of passengers that Tegel processes has grown in the last years. In 2005 almost 12 million travelers used this airport, a 4.5% increase from 2004.
The airport has a hexagonal shaped terminal through which passengers only need to walk short distances. In the middle there is a parking garage. To accommodate the growing number of passengers a second elongated terminal A1 has been built. Between the two terminals is the main building called “Boulevard Tegel”.
Local transport
Train
There is no direct train or underground connection with the airport, but bus line 128 goes to the nearest metro station at the Kurt Schumacher Platz (line U6).
Car and bus
The airport is eight kilometers northwest of the centre of Berlin along the highway (Autobahn) A111. This road makes a connection between the large ring road around Berlin (A10) and the inner-city ring A100. The route to the airport is clearly indicated on each of these roads.
Every ten minutes the JetExpressBus TXL (tel: +49(0)30 11861) leaves the airport to the Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) at the Alexanderplatz. The X9, another fast bus, goes to the metro station Berlin Zoo. Busses 128 and 109 connect the airport with various metro stations (U-Bahn) and the city train (Stadt-Bahn).
Car rental Berlin Tegel Airport
At the entrance of parking garage P2 are the counters for the car rental companies Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz, National Car Rental and Sixt. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides. They compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.
Taxi
Taxis can be found at the garage for short term parking (PK) and at terminal A1. A ride to the centre of Berlin costs approximately € 30.00.
Airport Parking
The centre of the hexagonal terminal is the parking garage for short term parking (PK, first 15 minutes € 1.00, and € 2.00 per 15 minutes after that). Parking garages P1 and P2 (first hour € 4.00, second hour € 8.00, and € 2.50 per hour after that) are close to the terminal and P5 (1 week € 95.00, 2 weeks € 155.00) is intended for long term parking. There is also a place for long term parking at the area that was intended for the second terminal. Because the airport will close the second terminal (“Terminal Ost”) will not be built.
