Tehran airport: Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport (IKA)

Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport

The construction of a new airport near the Iranian capital Tehran was already started before the Islamic Revolution of 1979, in cooperation with American engineers. Following the revolution, the project was stopped for many years and the airport could only open in 2004. The airport was named after the leader of the Islamic Revolution.

Imam Khomeini Airport only handles international flights; the older and smaller Mehrabad Airport is used for domestic flights.
