New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport

New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport
New Delhi Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL)

The international airport of New Delhi is currently being renovated thoroughly. Work is underway on a new terminal, which should be ready in 2010 and will increase the airport's capacity to almost 40 million passengers a year. This is not the end of the extensions; more runways and terminals have been planned to further increase capacity, up to 100 million passengers a year in 2026.

The terminals for domestic (T1) and international (T2) flights are located quite some distance apart (5 km). There is a free shuttle bus connecting the terminals.

Rates mentioned here are in Indian rupees. 1 euro is worth almost 85 rupees (March 2008).

Local transport

Train

There is no train connection to Delhi Airport.

Car and bus

The airport of New Delhi is located 23 kilometres to the south of the city. Along the main south-bound roads from Delhi, the road to the airport is clearly indicated.

There is a bus to the center every 25 minutes (travel time about 50 minutes). Luxury buses with air conditioning depart from the international terminal. There are two bus companies: Delhi Transport Corporation (green-yellow buses) and EATS (white-blue buses). Both companies have their final destination at New Delhi Railway Station. Tickets can be bought and a fixed seat can be booked at a desk in the Arrivals Hall.

Car rental

In the Arrivals there is a service desk of Avis, which provides chauffeur-driven (cars tel: +91(0)11 6501 2525). There are also other (private) car rental companies, which all rent only chauffeur-driven cars as well.

Taxi

In front of the Arrivals Hall, there are plenty of taxis. The city's biggest taxi company is EasyCabs (tel: +91(0)11 4343 4343). At the end of the ride you will be handed a receipt with the number of kilometres driven. Make sure to check this receipt! The official rate is 15 rupees per kilometre.
In addition, there is a desk of the Delhi Traffic Police, where you can buy a ticket for a fixed price, which you hand to the driver at the end of the ride.

Parking

At Terminal 2, there are two parking areas, divided into premium and standard parking. There is a free shuttle bus between the parking areas and the terminal building. The rate for the standard parking spaces is about 60 rupees per 4 hours, the premium ones costs twice as much.

Hotels

There is one hotel at the airport, the Centaur Hotel (tel: +91(0)011 2565 2223). Hotels in the neighborhood of the airport include Radisson Hotel Delhi (tel: +91(0)11 2677 9191) and Uppal's Orchid (tel: +91(0)11 2506 1515). For more hotels and online booking, visit Booking.com. Luggage

At the parking area near Terminal 2, there is a counter where you can store your luggage. You can also have your luggage packaged. For lost and found objects, please contact the office of the Airport Manager (in both terminals).

In the international Arrivals Hall, there is a counter with the text ‘May I help you’, where you can obtain general information about the airport, as well as transport and hotels. Both in the domestic and international Arrivals Hall, there are counters of the tourist agency.

Business
