Hong Kong International Airport

Hongkong International Airport
Hongkong International Airport (HKG)

The international airport of Hong Kong has two terminals. There is a free automatic train ('people mover') between the east and west wings of Terminal 1 and of the new Terminal 2 to the piers. In addition, there are elektrocars that you can use against payment (tel: +852(0)2 261 2727).

The rates mentioned here are in Hong Kong dollars. 1 euro is worth about 12 Hong Kong dollars (March 2008).

Local transport

Train

The Airport Express van MTR Corporation (tel: +852(0)2 881 8888) departs from the Ground Transportation Centre to the center of Hong Kong. The journey takes about 25 minutes and these trains also stop in Kowloon station.

Car and bus

The airport is located at 34 kilometres to the north-west of Hong Kong Island. From the center of the city, you can reach the airport via the Western Harbour Tunnel and then the West Kowloon Expressway. Follow the signs to the airport (clearly indicated). After the Tsing Ma Bridge, follow the North Lantau Highway to the entrance of the airport.

From the Ground Transportation Centre, many buses depart to various destinations, including to the North Point Ferry Pier, Hung Hom station and Lam Tin station. These bus lines are exploited by three companies: Citybus (tel: +852(0)2 873 0818), Long Win (tel: +852(0)2 261 2791) and New Lantao (tel: +852(0)2 984 9848).

In addition, there are various bus lines to different destinations in the Chinese province of Guangdong. They depart from Coach Station in Terminal 2. You need to have a Chinese visa to be able to travel from Hong Kong to China.

If you travel to a destination in the Pearl river delta, you can take the ferries of SkyPier (tel: +852(0)2 215 3232). They reach six destinations (Humen in DongGuan, Macau, Zhuhai Jiuzhou, Zhongshan, Shenzhen Fuyong and Shenzhen Shekou). Tickets can be bought at the desk in the Arrivals hall and a shuttle takes you to the departure point.

Car rental

There are few visitors who drive themselves in the hectic Hong Kong traffic. In the Arrivals hall, there are only desks of rental companies that provide chauffeur-driven cars: Intercontinental Hire Cars (tel: +852(0)2 261 2155) and Parklane Limousine Service (tel: +852(0)2 261 0303).

Taxi

There are also taxis at the Ground Transportation Centre. Keep in mind: the taxis have different colors, depending on their destination. Red taxis drive to virtually every destination in Hong Kong, with the exception of Lantau Island, green taxis drive to the New Territories, except those parts that are serviced by the red taxis, and blue taxis drive to places on Lantau Island. A cab ride to the center of Hong Kong costs about 350-400 dollars.

Parking

Hong Kong Airport has two parking areas (P1 short-term parking, P2 short-term and long-term parking) and a car park (P4). The P3 area for long-term parking is temporarily closed.
Parking areas P1 and P2 are located near terminals 1 and 2 respectively. The rates are 16 dollars per hour and 112 per day. In the car park that is connected directly to the terminal building the rates are 20 dollars per hour and 140 dollars per day.
For more information about parking, call: +852(0)2 286 0163/65.

Services

Hotels

The Regal Airport Hotel (tel: +852(0)2 286 8888) is connected to the terminal building via a pedestrian bridge. At the end of 2008, a second hotel will be opened at the airport, the SkyCity Marriott Hotel. In the Arrivals Hall, there are two desks for hotel reservations of the Hong Kong Hotels Association (tel: +852(0)2 383 8380 or +852(0)2 769 8822). For more hotels and online booking, visit Booking.com. They offer a wide range of hotels at very reasonable Internet rates.

Shops and restaurants

Hong Kong Airport has a wide variety of shops, restaurants, (snack) bars and cafés. In Terminal 1, the shopping and entertainment center is called SkyMart, in Terminal 2 SkyPlaza. In all, there are over 150 shops and places to eat and drink. There are plenty of duty-free shops in both terminals.

Luggage

Shopping paradise Hong Kong has one disadvantage: you may end up with too much luggage. No problem, at Hong Kong Airport you can send extra luggage via the UBS desk (K-wing, tel: +852(0)2 769 8681). In the Arrivals Hall you can store your luggage (tel: +852(0)2 261 0110) and on Level 6 there is a lost and found counter (+852(0)2 182 2018).

Information

There are general information desks in both the Arrivals Hall and the Departure Hall, open from 05.30-24.00 (tel: +852(0)2 181 0000). You can also get information via one of the special telephones that are located throughout the terminal, or via interactive touch screens.
In addition, there is a desk of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (tel: +852(0)2 508 1234).

Business

In the Departure Hall you will find the PCCW Business Centre, where you can fax and copy and rent a mobile telephone. Plaza Premium Lounges also offer business facilities (in the West Hall tel: +852(0)2 261 2622, in the East Hall tel: +852(0)2 261 2668). More extensive business facilities are provided by the Regal Airport Hotel and the soon to be opened Marriott Hotel (see under Hotels).
Immediately adjacent to the airport is the Asia World Expo (tel: +852(0)3 606 8828), where large conference and exhibition rooms are available.

Disabled

Hong Kong Airport is very accessible to disabled people. There are modified elevators, toilets and telephones, and there are wheelchair slopes everywhere. The shuttle trains and buses to Hong Kong are accessible to wheelchair users. The car park has handicapped parking spaces. For more information, contact Worldwide Flight Services Holding SA (tel: +852(0)2 261 2727).

Other services

Exchange offices and ATM's are located throughout the terminal building. In the Departure Hall there is a post office. Wireless Internet is available everywhere and in addition no fewer than 170 multimedia PowerPhones have been installed (not surprisingly, since Hong Kong houses PowerPhone's headquarters).
On Level 6, there is a medical center (tel: +852(0)2 261 2626), and next to it a pharmacy. On Level 7, there are showers and rooms to rest. Children's play areas are located at Gates 22 and 36.
