General information and regulations

In order to rent a car you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your licence for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Seatbelts are mandatory and child seats are mandatory for children up to age 3. Children under 12 may not sit in the front seat. An International Drivers Licence is highly recommended for non-EU residents.

The speed limits are as follows: in the city 31mph/50kph, on open roads 55mph/90kph amd highways 74mph/120kph.

The highways are well-maintained altough local roads need a bit of work. Pay attention in the mountain regions: it is highly recommended to use the horn of your car at certain corners.

Driving in Spain with a rental car

With a network of roads covering 160,000 km you will certainly enjoy having a car. Madrid is located centrally, in the Northeast you will find Barcelona and Sevilla is the largest city in the South.

When you arrive at Barcelona airport, a trip to Zaragosa, at 257 km further inland, is recommended. This beautiful city with its impressive cathedrals is not very known among tourist despite its allure and monuments. It is just as impressive as the other large cities in Spain.

Those who land on Sevilla airport can explore the region of Adalucia and the famous mountain range of the Sierra Nevada. Cities such as Córdoba (with its famous 'Mezquita') and Granada (famous for the impressive Alhambra) are well worth a visit in this region. Another area of interest is the rocky peninsula of Gibraltar, at 150 km South of Sevilla.

With Madrid as your starting point a trip to Toledo is recommended. This city of culture has many museums and can be reached within one hour.

The large Spanish airports have several car rental companies, under which: Atesa, Avis, Alamo, Hertz and Europcar. Another option is booking a rental car through EasyTerra. This website compares the rates of multiple car rental companies for your convenience.
