General information about Milan

Milan has two international airports. Malpensa is located about 50 km from the center of Milan. You can easily reach the city by car. From the airport, first take the SS-336 to Busto Arsizio. There, the road connects to the A8 (Autostrada A8 Laghi) which leads to Milan.

Linate Airport is much closer to the city (7 km) and is mainly used for domestic and European flights. The airport has excellent road connections to Milan and other places in Italy. From the center of Milan, take Via XXII Marzo and Viale Corsica to the eastern part of the city bypass (Tangenziale Est). The exit "Linate" is clearly indicated.

Bergamo (Orio al Serio) International Airport is located 45 km northeast of Milan, and is mainly used by budget airlines. The airport is situated along highway A-4, which connects Milan to Venice.

Sightseeing with your rental car

Milan is a fascinating city with many sights, but there is also plenty to see and do around Milan. Rent a car in Milan to visit these attractions. Here are some suggestions.

Milan is close to the great Italian lakes: the Lago Maggiore, Lake Como and Lake Lugano. Not only the lakes, but also their surrounding towns and villages are worth a visit. Obviously all of these places are most easily visited if you rent a car.

Lake Como is about an hour's drive from Milan. There is a road around the lake that follows the ancient Strada Regina. Some highlights around the lake are: the town of Como with a large cathedral, Bellagio that offers spectacular views, the Santa Maria del Tiglio in Gravedona with an octagonal bell tower, the caves in Lario, which were used for wine cellars, and the medieval castle of Vezio near Varenna.

Lake Garda, northwest of Milan is easily accessible by car. Visit the lively town of Desenzano del Garda, go see the beautiful frescoes in Villa Bettoni Bogliaco, and see the archaeological finds at the museum of the fortress town of Torri del Benaco.

Monza is mostly known for its Formula 1 races. But did you know that this race track is located in a beautiful park? It does get very busy on weekends. If you're not tired yet of shopping, after Milan: Monza has a large pedestrian shopping area. It also has a cathedral, where the so-called Iron Crown is kept. This Crown of the Lombards' has a wrought iron circle on the inside. According to history, this metal comes from a nail of Jesus' cross. Monza is located 15 km northeast of Milan and is easily accessible by car: take the A4 north, the exit "Monza" is clearly indicated.

Renting a car in Milan

You can pick up your rental car from Malpensa, Linate and Bergamo Airport, the main railway station of Milan and from various branches throughout the city. Traffic in downtown Milan is very busy. You'll also have to pay to be allowed to drive there. But for tours around the area, a car is perfect.
