Non-EU residents need to obtain an International Drivers Licence in order to drive, do not forget to apply for these papers on time. Many car rental companies have a maximum age for car rental in addition to a minimum age: 70 years.

Seatbelts are mandatory and children up to 4 years are required to sit in a child seat (in the back).

Traffic travels on the right and the speed limits are as follows: in the city 30mph/50kph, on open roads 50 mph/80kph and highways 74mph/100kph.

Driving in Greece with a rental car

Driving through Greece is fun, the hills are beautiful and the panoramic views of the Mediterranean Sea are impressive. However, there is a downside to the splendor. Greece has one of the highest amounts of traffic accidents in Europe. Those who land at Iraklion Airport (Crete) need not worry, the roads here are excellent.

Depending on the place of arrival a couple of nice trips can be made by car. The island of Corfu invites visitors to take trips along the coast. The blue-white houses that many people recognise from books and brochures are a striking sight during a tour around the island. The most famous areas of interest can be reached from Athens in the blink of an eye. The Parthenon on the Acropolis and the surrounding Parnitha and Penteli mountains are easily accessed by car.

Other places that can be reached are Eleusina (30 km from Athens), Piraeus (9 km from Athens) and Chalkis (these ensure a nice daytrip). Chalkis is connected to the mainland by means of a bridge, which has been like this ever since 400 BC (the bridge used to be made from wood). Chalkis is the capital of the island Euboea.
