General information and regulations

To rent a car you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your licence for 1 year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge. Some rental companies have a maximum age as well: 69 years.

Seatbelts are mandatory, as well as child seats for children up to 3 years. Driving at the left side of the road takes some time to get used to, although this is made easy by the decent driving style in the UK. Special attention goes to the roundabouts in the country, many tourists enter these the wrong way.

Speed limits are as follows: in the city 30mph/50kph, local roads 60mph/96kph and highways 70mph/112kph.

Driving in Great Britain with a rental car

A lot of nice trips can be made in England, Scotland and Wales, depending on the city of arrival. Most of the cities are interconnected and a daytrip from London to Birmingham (about 160 km) is easily arranged. The Victoria Square in central Birmingham is well worth a visit.

Furthermore, cities such as Liverpool and Leeds are worth a daytrip. The harbour in Liverpool is listed under UNESCO since 2004. Another option from London is a visit to the county of Kent. With your own car many of the castles can be visited without effort.

The drive from London to Glasgow is interesting as well, although it is recommended to divide the trip over 2 days. Along the way, which is about 550 km you will find numerous Bed and Breakfast houses for your stay overnight.

A trip to Wales (from London) is easy as well. It takes 300 km to reach the town of Harlech, with charming castles and national park Snowdonia which are well worth the visit.
