Driving in Finland with a rental car
Finland has a relatively low population (approximately 5 million) and driving along the quiet, tranquil country roads is a true delight. Small meandering roads are strategically built around the many lakes in order to get from place to place, albeit in most regions.
The further up north, the fewer roads remain. Helsinki is located due South. To the North-East of Helsinki, at about 300 km you will find the enchanting region of Punkaharju. The woods and lakes are lovely here and humans are rarely found. Rock drawings from the Bronze Age were found in this region.
Furthermore, Lapland is well worth a visit although this province (and region) is quite a drive from Helsinki. The distance between Helsinki and Lapland's capital Rovaniemi is about 700 km. When you decide to make this trip, a pitstop and overnight stay in Kuopi are in order, this is the largest city of Eastern Finland.
