General information and regulations
To rent a car, you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your licence for one year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.
Within city limits the speed limit is 30mph/50kph and on highways it is 54mph/90kph. On some roads the maximum speed is 60mph/100kph.
Traffic travels on the right and headlights must be turned on at all times. In the front, seatbelts are mandatory.
Driving in Estonia with a rental car
Estonia has a few highways, although the network of roads is good. During the last couple of years the government has worked hard in order to facilitate travelers in visiting the adjacent countries and tourist attractions. The 'Via Baltica' runs from Tallin to Parnu in the South-West and eventually to Riga (Lithuania). Parnu is the fifth city of Estonia and shows Baroque architecture in all its beauty, for example in the lovely Elisabeth Church.
The 'Via Estonia' runs from Tallin to the Russian border in the South-East. The 'Via Hansa' runs parallel to the gulf of Finland and leads to Narva and St. Petersburg. Narva is the third city of Estonia and houses the Hermann Castle. The city is situated at the Narva river, which forms the border to Russia. Opposite the city lies the (Russian) city of Ivangorod.
Estonia is not particularly large, making it easy to drive from Tallin to cities such as Parnu and Tartu. The latter is the second city of Estonia, with the most prominent university of the country.
