General information and regulations
In order to rent a car you must be at least 21 years old (age may vary by car category) and have held your licence for one year. Drivers under the age of 25 may incur a young driver surcharge.
Seatbelts are mandatory for all passengers. Speed limits are: city 37mph/60kph, open Roads 62mph/100 kph and highways 81mph/130kph.
Traffic travels on the right in Croatia. Not all roads are well-maintained so beware of this. Especially the roads outside Zagreb and Dubrovnik seem a little 'worn'.
Driving in Croatia with a rental car
Tours along the coast result in beautiful panoramic views of the scenery and there is always more to explore. From parts of the Alps to the Dinara mountains and skiing resorts as well as white beaches, Croatia has it all. The country is known for its many national parks and most of these are well worth a visit.
Those who enjoy the outdoors will recognise the Plitvice lakes from brochures or their wildest dreams. The lakes and national park are situated at 100 km from Zagreb and therefore easy to reach. Please note that fuel stations are scarce in the countryside so be sure to fill up before your trip (in urban areas).
The southernmost point of Croatia is another popular destination and well worth the visit. The city of Dubrovnik is located due South and often referred to as one of the most beautiful cities along the Adriatic coast. It is quite a drive from Zagreb to Dubrovnik (388 km) although the trip can be divided over 2 days (or 1 for early birds).
In addition, the peninsula of Istria is a nice destination. Pula is the southernmost city on Istria and over 3,000 years old. The journey from Zagreb is a modest one: less than 200 km.
