Traffic rules on Curaçao resemble those in the Netherlands, albeit with a few adjustments. Important is maintaining an easygoing driving style. Take it slow and use the brakes frequently. Do not be alarmed when someone moves past your left or right side, even along the banks of the road.
After heavy rains it is recommended to maintain a 19mph/30 kph limit due to slippery roads. Pay attention to T-junctions: traffic driving straight ahead has the right of way.
Maximum speeds are 25mph/40 kph in the city, and 50mph/80 kph on local roads. In most cases, the minimum age when renting a car is 23 years.
Driving on Curaçao with a rental car
Curaçao stretches 61 km in length and 5 to 14 km in width. It is easy to navigate the whole island within the hour. From the capital city of Willemstad to the caves of Hato, Westpunt (westpoint) and the former plantation estates, these sites are well worth a visit.
Furthermore, the Christoffelpark, with its 375 metres high 'Christoffelberg' (mountain) in the middle, is remarkable as well. The National Park Shete Boka is worth a visit as it shows breeding grounds for sea turtles. However, the main attraction on the island is Willemstad itself, with its colourful architecture and historical centre, which is often referred to as the 'Amsterdam of the Western Hemisphere'.
