Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ)

Toronto Airport is the busiest airport in Canada. About 30 million passengers use the airport each year. It was opened in 1939 under the name ‘Malton Airport’ and was renamed Toronto International Airport in 1960. Another new name change followed in 1984. Since then it is officially called Lester B. Pearson International Airport in honor of the 14th prime minister of Canada.

In order to capture the growing flow of passengers there is hard work being done on expanding and improving the airport. That renovation should be completed in 2008. For the financing there is a surcharge calculated into your ticket ($20.00 for departing passengers, $ 8.00 for through travelers).

There is a free LINK shuttle train going between the three terminals.

Local transport

Train

There is no train connection with the airport.

Car and bus

The airport is 32 kilometers west of the centre of Toronto and is easily accessible by Highway 409 that connects to Highway 401. The airport is also accessible by Highway 427. The exits to the airport are easily indicated. You can see for yourself which terminal your airline uses on the signs along the highway.

There are several bus lines between the airport and Toronto. Line 192 from the Toronto Transit Commission (tel: +1(0)416 393 4636) is a shuttle connection (Airport Rocket) to the metro station Kipling (Bloor-Danforth metro line). TTC-bus line 58A goes to the station Lawrence West (metro line Spadina). GO Transit maintains express busses to the stations York Mills and Yorkdale.

Furthermore there is a special hotel shuttle bus (Pacific Western Airport Express), and at night there are busses between the airport and several destinations in Toronto (i.e. Danforth Avenue, Bloor Street, Yonge Street and Eglinton Avenue).

Car rental Toronto Pearson International Airport

Car rental companies Avis, Budget, Dollar/Thrifty, Hertz and National/Alamo have counters in the Arrivals Hall. Outside the airport there are two more: Discount and Enterprise. You have to reserve in advance the free shuttle bus to these companies. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides. They compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.

Taxi

Taxis are in front of all terminals and must stick to the official rates. You can find the rates on the airport website: for destinations in Toronto.

Airport Parking

There are parking garages by all terminals that directly connect to the airport. The rates for parking in the garages are $ 3.00 per half hour, with a maximum of $ 24.00 for the first day and $ 120.00 for the whole week.

Just outside the airport is a large parking area (Reduced Rate Lot, rate: $2.50 per half hour, maximum per day $ 14.50, per week $65.00). The LINK-train goes between this parking area and the terminals.

There is one hotel in the terminal: Sheraton Gateway Hotel (in Terminal 3, tel: +1(0)905 672 7000). Shops and restaurants

There are many bars, cafés, restaurants and shops. The largest concentrations are in Terminals 1 and 3. There are also a few in Terminal 2 (for destinations in the United States). The branches of Roost/Swiss Chalet are restaurants with services.

Baggage

In Terminals 1 (tel: +1(0)416 776 7749) and 3 (tel: +1(0)416 776 7751) there are offices for lost and found items. The service is not limited to lost and found items at the airport, but also in the busses of the Greater Toronto Transport Authority (GTAA).

Information

There are general information counters in all terminals (tel: +1(0)416 247 7678 for Terminals 1 and 2, tel: +1(0)416 776 5100 for Terminal 3).

Business

You can find business facilities in the Sheraton Hotel at the airport. There are 24 fully furnished meeting and conference rooms (max. 300 persons). The Best Western Hotel also offers extensive facilities for business travelers.

Handicapped persons

Toronto Pearson Airport is excellently accessible for handicapped persons. In all terminals there are wheelchair ramps, adapted elevators and restrooms, and text telephones.

All parking garages and the large parking area outside the airport have places reserved for handicapped persons. The shuttle train is accessible for wheelchair users.

Other services

There is a bank in the Arrivals Hall of Terminal 2. Furthermore, there are money exchange offices, cash machines and a post office. Internet access is available. Every terminal has its own medical service (the largest in Terminal 1, tel: +1(0)416 776 2840). There is also a psychologist available in crisis situations (tel: +1(0)905 676 4396).
