First, here is a small explanation about the spelling of Girona. We are keeping here the Catalan spelling, but in Spanish it is spelled Gerona. The complete name of the airport is Girona-Costa Brava.

Girona Airport is in northeast Spain 12, kilometers outside the city of Girona and 100 kilometers from Barcelona. It is an important airport for tourists that want to go to Costa Brava or Barcelona, and it is also the entrance to the Pyrenees to the north of Girona. Especially thanks to the arrival of the Irish budget company Ryanair in 2003, the importance of Girona has increased. Ryanair uses Girona as a junction for connections all over Europe. In order to increase the capacity work has to be done on lengthening the runways and improving the taxi ways for airplanes. Roughly estimating, the airport will process four million passengers per year by 2010.

Local Transport

Train

Girona Airport as no rail connection, but it is possible to travel by bus or taxi to Girona and take a train from there to Barcelona. Trains to the Catalan capital leave on average every half hour. The price is dependent on the company and varies between € 6.00 and € 15.00. See also the website of the Spanish Railroads RENFE.

Car and bus

The airport is accessible via motorway N-11 (Madrid-La Junquera), the toll road A-7 (Barcelona-France), or the C-25 (Girona-Lleida). All roads have clear signs to the airport. Most people travel via the toll road. That is accessible from the airport via the GI-534. After another half kilometer you come to a roundabout. Follow it in the direction of Barcelona. The toll costs approximately € 10.00 to Barcelona.

Before the Arrivals Hall there are bus stops for three bus lines: to Girona, to Costa Brava, and to Barcelona. These buses can be very busy, especially after the arrival of a budget flight.

A bus leaves every 20 minutes from 5:00 in the morning to Girona. In Girona you can take a bus to one of the popular seaside resorts.
Some seaside resorts are directly accessible from the airport: Lloret de Mar, Blanes, Malgrat de Mar, Santa Susanna and Calella de la Costa.
The bus to the centre of Barcelona leaves only upon the arrival of airplanes. The ride is one and a half hours and the cost is € 11.00 (one way).

Car rental Girona-Costa Brava Airport

The counters of four car rental companies can be found in the Arrivals Hall: Hertz, Avis, Europcar and Auriga. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides. They compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.

Taxi

Girona Airport taxis take a maximum of four passengers, including children. Prices for popular destinations are: Platja D'Ora (40 km) € 45, Lloret de Mar (28 km) € 40, Barcelona (103 km) € 115.

Airport Parking

Short term parking at the airport was free, but that has ended with the expansion of the parking capacity. However, the rates are reasonable. The first hour costs € 0.90, and is € 0.75 per hour after that.

Long term parking is the responsibility of Punt Central (tel: +34(0)972 477 514), which is a guarded covered lot with free shuttle busses to the terminals. Parking for a week costs about € 40.00.

Hotels

There is one hotel at the airport: Vilobi Park. (tel: +34(0)972 473 483). The price for a room varies between € 65 and € 80, excluding 7% VAT. Other hotels in the area are the Novotel Girona on highway A-7 (tel: +34(0)972 477 100) and Hotel Husa Fornells Park in Fornells de la Selva (tel: +34(0)972 476 125). Shops and restaurants

Girona Airport does not have a large selection of stores. There is one large duty free shop, Aldeasa, with the usual items, including smoking products, liquor, wine and fancy food products. There are three restaurants.

You can find a general information counter and a tourist counter in the terminal. Ryanair and Iberia both have separate information counters.

Business

The airport has a VIP lounge which can only be used upon request. In the old terminal there is a conference and meeting hall equipped with a bar. Reserving the VIP lounge and the meeting hall can be done by calling tel: +34(0)972 186 630.

Handicapped persons

Girona Airport has no separate facilities for handicapped persons, but the staff are always prepared to help.

Other services

The airport has a First Aid station. In the Arrivals Hall you can find a cash machine and money exchange offices. There is also a mailbox.
