Madeira Airport (Funchal) (FNC)
Until recently Madeira Airport had a very short runway which makes it a difficult airport for pilots. The runway was extended in 2000 with support of the European Union. More than two million passengers use Madeira Airport per year.
Local transport
Train
No trains operate on Madeira.
Car and bus
The airport is near Santa Cruz, 16 kilometers from Funchal. There is one road that goes from the capital to the airport (Via Rápida). The travel time is about 15 minutes. On average every hour a bus leaves the airport to Funchal, Machico and Caniço. Aerobus has a connection between the airport and Praia Formosa (free for passengers from TAP, for other travelers € 4.00).
Car rental Madeira Airport
In the terminal there are counters for the car rental companies Auto Jardim, Avis, Hertz, Drive, Europcar and Rodavante. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides. They compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.
Taxi
Taxis are in front of the Arrivals Hall. A ride to Funchal costs about € 25.00, to Garajau € 17.50 and to Machico € 10.00. There is an extra charge of 20% at night and on Sundays and holidays.
Airport Parking
There are five parking areas at the airport. For P1 you pay € 0.60 for the first hour, then € 1.00 per hour. P2 costs € 0.50 per hour or € 11.00 per day. For areas 5, 6 and 7 you can park for free for the first 45 minutes, then € 0.30 per hour or € 3.00 per day.

Hotels
There are no hotels at the airport, but there are hotels in the hotel district of Funchal (west of the city). For more hotels and reserving online you can go to Booking.com. They have a large offering of hotels with great internet rates.
Shops and restaurants
The airport has a modest offering of bars, restaurants and shops. This includes the Aldeasa Duty Free Shop in the Departures Hall. Furthermore, you can purchase local products there (including wine).
On the top floor (Level 3) you have a beautiful view of the airplanes from the restaurant.
Baggage
The police station next to the terminal also functions as the office for lost and found items (tel: +351(0)291 520 889). On the ground floor you can deposit baggage (price: € 1.50 per day).
Information
The Madeira Airport Information Desk can be found on Level 1 (Arrivals Hall). There is an office from the Tourism Bureau on the ground floor (tel: +351(0)291 524 933) and a reservations counter from Madeira Rural (for booking accommodation on the countryside, tel: +351(0)291 520 868).
Business
Madeira Airport has two VIP Lounges, one on the ground floor and one on Level 1. The airport offers personal escorts to and from the airport. The most comprehensive service costs € 100 (two personal assistants for a group of maximum ten persons).
Handicapped persons
There are adapted elevators and restrooms in the terminal for handicapped persons, but other than that there are limited services for handicapped persons. There are no lifts to help handicapped passengers in and out of the airport.
Other services
There is wireless internet access in the airport. There are two banks, a money exchange office and cash machines. There is also a post office in the Arrivals Hall.
