Tunis Carthage International Airport (TUN)
The airport of Tunis is named after the ancient city of Carthage, to the north of the airport. Flights are handled very efficiently at this airport, although the passport check may take quite some time.
Rates mentioned here are in the Tunisian dinar. 1 euro is worth about 1.80 dinar (March 2008).
Local transport
Train
There is no train connection to the airport of Tunis.
Car and bus
The airport is located 7 kilometres to the north-east of Tunis. Directions to the airport are indicated as early as in the city center. Travel time is 15-30 minutes, depending on the traffic.
SNT bus line 35 departs every 30 minutes to the center of Tunis. A ticket costs less than 1 dinar. The more luxurious TUT buses are a little more expensive - a little over a dinar - and depart every 15 minutes.
Car rental
In the Arrivals Hall, there are desks of car rental companies Avis, Budget, Hertz and Sixt. There are also many local companies, but make sure that all taxes are included in the rental price and that the car is in good shape. You can also book a rental car in advance at EasyTerra, which offers a comparison of several providers.
Taxi
At the taxi stand, there are taxis with meters. Make sure the driver turns the meter on! A ride to the city should cost 5 dinars - according to the meter, but taxi drivers often try to get more. There is an extra charge for luggage, and after 21.00, there is a 50% surcharge .
Do not respond to 'deals' from taxi drivers in the Arrivals hall!
Parking
In front of the terminal building, there is a parking area with 2500 spaces. The rate is 0,65 dinar for the first 12 hours and after that 3 dinars per day.
Services
Hotels
There are no hotels at the airport premises. The hotels in La Marse are located closest to the airport, including Golden Tulip Carthage (tel: +216(0)71 913 000), Abou Nawas Le Palace (tel: +216(0)71 912 000) and Regency Tunis Hotel (tel: +216(0)71 910 900). Hotels can be booked at the counter of the Tourism Office in the central hall. For more hotels and online booking, visit Booking.com. They offer a wide range of hotels at very reasonable Internet rates.
Shops and restaurants
There are a few restaurants, snack bars and cafés, both in front of and behind customs. Although the number of shops is reasonable, it is better to buy the Tunisian products they sell in Tunis, where they are much cheaper. Duty-free products like cigarettes and other tobacco products are, however, cheap.
Luggage
It is not possible to store luggage at Tunis Airport. The lost and found counter is at the general information desk.
Information
There are general information desks in the Arrivals Hall (tel: +216(0)71 733 974) and in the Departure Hall (tel: +216(0)71 733 9 66). In addition, there is a desk of the Office National du Tourisme Tunisien (ONTT, tel: +216(0)71 733 719) in the central hall.
Business
The VIP lounge in the Departure Hall offers fax and telephone services and computers. Other than that, Tunis Airport offers no business services. Golden Tulip Carthage has meeting and conference rooms for 14 to 350 people. The Regency Hotel also offers excellent business services. See also under Hotels.
Disabled
Tunis Airport is reasonably accessible to disabled people. There is a modified toilet and the elevators are accessible to wheelchair users. There are wheelchair slopes. For assistance, contact the information desk.
Other services
There are six banks at Tunis Airport. In addition, there are exchange offices and ATM's, as well as a post office. Also, you can rent a mobile phone and there is a hairdresser. There is a First Aid station in the Arrivals Hall (tel: +216(0)71 733 000/200).
