Windhoek International Airport (WDH)
Windhoek Hosea Kutako International Airport is the most important airport in Namibia and is rather far from Windhoek: 42 kilometers east of the capital. The airport is used almost only for international flights. Domestic flights arrive or depart from the smaller Eros Airport that is much closer to Windhoek.
Prices are given here in the Namibian dollars (NAD). € 1.00 = NAD 9.46 (January 2007). The Namibian dollar is linked the South African rand.
Local transport
Train
There is no train connection with the airport.
Car and bus
The airport is along the road from Windhoek to Gobabis (B6) which is also named the Trans-Kalahariweg. The exit to the airport is clearly indicated.
Busses leave the Departures Hall to the combined taxi and bus station on Independence Avenue in the centre of Windhoek. There is also a direct connection with Eros Airport for flights within Namibia. Just like for taxis the bus rates are clearly indicated.
Car rental Windhoek International Airport
There are counters in the Arrivals Hall for the car rental companies Avis, Budget, Europcar, Hertz and Imperial. You can also reserve a rental car in advance using the service EasyTerra provides. They compare the rates of several providers in a single quote.
Taxi
Taxis are outside the Arrivals Hall. You can purchase a ticket in advance at a fixed rate. The prices for various destinations are given on a board. The official taxis are recognizable by a black rectangle with a number. It is better to use these official taxis. In the Central Hall many ‘taxi drivers’ will try to speak to you. Do not discuss their proposals!
Airport Parking
There are three different parking areas: for short term parking, for longer term parking and for long term parking. The last area is in the shade and is guarded. If you are parking more than five hours you are advised to put your car there.
Services
Hotels
There are no hotels at the airport. The nearest hotel is the Heja Game Lodge. For business hotels it is best to go to the centre of Windhoek.
Shops and restaurants
There are not a lot of shops and eating and drinking places offered. There are only a few shops in the airport. Moreover, there is one restaurant/snack bar with 40 seating places.
Baggage
You cannot store baggage at the airport. The service counter is the counter for lost and found items. Like throughout Africa, porters are on hand in large numbers.
Information
In the Arrivals Hall there is both a general information counter as well as a window for tourist information.
Business
There are limited business facilities. In the Departures Hall – after customs – is a VIP Lounge. More information thorugh the general telephone number.
Handicapped Persons
The airport is accessible for handicapped persons. The terminal was entirely renovated in 2001, and wheelchair ramps and adapted restrooms were installed. For assistance you can go to the service counter in the Central Hall.
Other services
There are cash machines and two money exchange offices in the Arrivals Hall.
